Conversations From the Backseat/United in Spirit

Mary: "Mom, do you hear me when I pray to you?"
Me: "Do you mean when you pray for me?"
Mary: "No, to you. When I am in school and I feel sad or worried, I pray to you. Can you hear me?"
Me: "I guess I do. Every once in a while, I think of you and your smile, and then I smile too. Or I'll glance at your picture on my desk and just feel a wave of love for you, and I'll ask God to bless you. That must be when you are praying to me, so I would say, yes, I do hear you when you pray to me."

Glancing in the rear-view mirror, I see a sweet little girl with a big smile on her face and I realize that she needs the intercession of her mother even if her mother is not a saint.

United in Spirit

Can you hear me
thinking of you?
Can you feel my arms
longing to hold you?
Are you warmed
by my heart loving you?
Do my prayers
lift you up?

I can’t be with you
in body
but I am with you
in spirit.

  1. This made me smile, too. Your Mary is very sweet. We are blessed!

  2. Anne,
How sweet that Mary prays to you during her day. And in her eyes you are a saint.
As a post-abortive mother, this poem was the voice of my daughter in heaven. I know she prays for me. Without my even being aware of it, it was partly her prayers that brought me back to Christ. Her prayers definitely lift me up and I know she is always with me in spirit.
Thank you for sharing this. I know you wrote it from a mother to her child, but this mother heard her child in it. It was like a kiss from heaven.
    God Bless.

  3. Karinann, I am so glad that this story touched your heart in a unique way. It's interesting how God works, isn't it? He can take anything and make it specific for your own life. His love for each of us never ceases to amaze me!

Mary, you are right! We are so very blessed!

Though I am not a mother, I also find this very, very beautiful. I'm glad I found your 'blog today, Anne. =)

  5. What a sweet conversation between you and your daughter. :) You inspire me.

  6. I disagree...any mother who gives such a beautiful, pure, comforting answer to a little girl's question such as you INDEED a Saint, Anne! This post brought tears to my eyes.
This is such a beautiful example of the love you and Mary share...and the way that God knits it all together for you both...even when you are apart. Thank you so much for sharing it!

  7. Very, very sweet, Anne. Made me smile and get all misty.
What a precious little girl you have.

  8. That is one of the sweetest things I've ever heard!!!

  9. So beautiful. I am going to email this to my two sons! They are grown and married but will appreciate it. They live out of town and I miss them. God bless!

  10. Great post. Thanx for sharing it with us.

God bless you and your family.

  11. Thanks for the reminder of our connectedness!
